Red Hat Enterprise Linux Support Information

RHEL Site Subscription Information

The University has purchased a site-subscription for Red Hat Enterprise Linux. This subscription allows us to offer an enterprise-class Linux operating system, and accompanying services, to current students, faculty, and staff members for both personal and institutional use. We've also deployed a Red Hat Network proxy server for installing new software packages, updating the software you've already installed, and keeping your operating system patched. Having a local proxy means you won't be receiving your updates over the Internet from Red Hat; you'll be using a system located on UTA's network.

Why Red Hat?

While there are many versions of Linux available, they all seem to do things differently. Trying to keep up with and support every version of Linux would be a logistical nightmare for the OIT support staff. We recommend Red Hat Enterprise Linux for use on University owned computer systems. If you require support for other versions of Linux, or need support for your home system, we recommend that you post a message on the local Linux Users Group Bulletin Board.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux products are based on the same core kernel, libraries and utilities, and also share the same major package sets. However, because Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS is not designed for use in server environments, there are some differences between family members in terms of their server package sets.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux is available in a variety of configurations to fit your application, architecture and support needs

Personal use of Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS is not supported. If you require RHEL AS on your home computer, or you are a student needing a server, you must purchase a copy directly from Red Hat.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS

Please see the downloads section of the web site for downloadable disc images.

If you've already obtained RHEL and would like to use our proxy server to receive updates, please see the RHN Update Client Configuration instructions.

  • Students, faculty and staff may use Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS for personal use on their personally-owned computer systems.
  • Students must be currently enrolled in classes, faculty and staff must be currently employed by the University to use the update service.
  • Access to the UTA-provided Red Hat Enterprise Linux distribution and/or update service may not be shared.
  • The site subscription does not include email or telephone support directly from Red Hat, Inc. If you require support, please purchase directly from Red Hat, Inc. Other support options include the OIT Computing Helpdesk for support on UTA-owned computer systems or the Arlington Linux Users Group at UTA for personally-owned computer systems.
In response to customer concerns over intellectual property litigation over open source software, Red Hat has included the Open Source Assurance as part of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. This serves as a warranty on all open source code distributed with Red Hat Enterprise Linux and guarantees replacement of code and assistance with legal fees in the event of intellectual property claims by third parties.
